five-ninesolutions Achieves Phenomenal SAS Performance Benchmarks with HIDEF Encoding.
This month, five-ninesolutions tested a serial attached SCSI (SAS) version of its high performance HIDEF encoding product. The results of throughput testing the SAS RAID delivered some amazing statistics that are unparalleled in the computer industry.
The specification used for testing:
- Supermicro X7DA8 Motherboard (Intel® 5000X Greencreek Chipset ,Intel ESB2 SATAII Controller)
- Supermicro SAS Backplanes
- 2 X Kingston 667 DDR2 1GB RAM
- Atto R348 SAS RAID Controller
- Seagate 15,000 RPM Cheetah 15K.5 SAS 73GB Drives (RAID 0 – Media Storage)
- 2 X Seagate Barracuda 750GB SATA II (RAID1 – Media storage)
- 2 X Seagate Momentus SATA II (RAID1 – Operating System)
- Windows XP Professional
The SAS drives were configure in RAID0 which provides the best drive performance, however tests using RAID1 and RAID5 were performed and their statistics recorded. The following table details the RAID level and the performance gained*.

As we can see, when using four SAS drives in RAID0 (Striping) we achieve a sustained data transfer rate of 460MB/s which is greater than normal UltraSCSI/SCSI controllers most of which claim a sustained rate of up to 380MB/s which is rarely achievable.
With sustained transfer speeds like this, we can stream multiple large files across a network or multiple high-definition streams. This makes the platform ideal for high speed data delivery/networking as well as the redundancy of RAID5. These data transfer rates could easily saturate a 100Mbit network connection which is why our servers come with dual onboard gigabit LAN controllers for a max throughput of 2Gbit. With so much available bandwidth, more data streams can be transferred simultaneously.
