Context:
As the TV industry moves towards tapeless operation, post production houses are spending an increasing amount of time encoding video into a wide variety of digital file formats.
Client:
Root6 Technology, which specialise in cutting edge technology for the media industry, realised there was a need to develop a versatile encoding workhorse. Thus ContentAgent-XR was born - a multi-format video encoding system that is designed to encode and distribute large amounts of data simply, quickly and efficiently.
Brief:
To design and develop, integrate and test the most optimal solution to run the ContentAgent-XR application.
Solution:
Tasked with developing a suitable platform to run ROOT6 Technology’s application, five-ninesolutions worked closely with the client to produce the hardware solution. Aside for the high-end computer parts, custom components were designed and manufactured to allow;
- A secondary hard disk drive to be mounted internally.
- A proprietary enclosure to house the primary drive and increase cooling throughout the chassis whilst also adding product branding.
- Additional I/O from the front of the chassis in the form of FireWire, USB2 and Audio.
- Customised fan mounting brackets to accomodate additional ‘lower-noise’ cooling fans.
- Customised cable looms were also designed and developed to conect all interfaces to the main board.
With the integration process completed and the software installed, the solution was then tested to confirm operation of both hardware and software. With all checks completed, the machines were then fitted into a test rack for an extended soak test.
The finished units are then shipped in custom packaging to the head office of ROOT6 in Soho, London.
Impact:
Encoding is time consuming, repetitive and subject to tight deadlines. The simplicity of XR, together with its proven efficiency, has dramatically reduced the amount of time that is spent on the encoding process.
